Justine, the creative force behind the Sew Country Chick blog and Justine Marie Patterns, recently launched The Ojai Wrap PDF pattern and I’m up next on the pattern tour! The Ojai Wrap is wrap cardigan with short sleeves, a shawl collar, and a subtle low/high hem.

I recently found a rather large bag of fabric in my closet that I purchased a few months ago from Colorado Fabrics and promptly forgot about. It’s kinda the same feeling as finding 20 bucks in the pocket of your winter coat after pulling it out the next season, except even better as that bag of fabric was worth quite a bit more than 20 bucks (um, don’t tell Andy). Among the 10 yards of various fabric in the bag was about 2 yards of this awesome striped knit. I’m not completely sure what it is, but it’s like a light weight french terry with a great drape.

I cut the XS size and didn’t make any adjustments to the overall fit. However, the Ojai Wrap is designed for an average height of 5’6, so I took off about 2 inches from the length as I’m only topping the charts around 5’2-ish. I probably could have taken more off the length, but I like longer tops so I can cover my rear while wearing leggings.

I made this top using just my serger since I wanted to get some more practice with garment construction on the serger. I even rethreaded it to do a coverstitch on the hem! So fancy. But, this pattern can easily be made with a stretch stitch on a sewing machine.

The pattern includes button tabs on the sleeves, but I accidentally mistook a tab pattern piece for a scrap piece of fabric and used it as a practice piece when troubleshooting my serger. Whoops. I should have cut another piece but… you know how that goes. 😉 Luckily I can easily add it on later as it’s one of the last steps.

All in all, I’m really happy with how my Ojai Wrap turned out! I think it’s super cute and a perfect layering piece! It was a pretty quick sew and I think it would be great for beginners.
